Hi, I’m Kristen Alvarez, and I’m the founder of Happy Paws Home Care. Since 2012, I’ve been on a mission to create a service that not only provides exceptional care for pets but also brings peace of mind to their families. Happy Paws is built on a foundation of love, trust, and attention to detail—values I’ve carried with me since day one and that continue to shape how we care for pets and their people today.
My journey with animals began with Bas, my first dog and lifelong best friend, who was by my side from the age of 12 to 26. Her companionship sparked my deep passion for animal care and inspired me to pursue hands-on experience early in life. As a teenager, I worked weekends and summers with my mentor, an equine veterinarian, where I learned the art of care and compassion. From 15 through my college years at the Ohio State University, I worked in small animal clinics and at the university’s veterinary hospital, building a strong foundation in animal health and care.
When I first started Happy Paws, I personally provided in-home pet care visits for years. Those experiences gave me a firsthand understanding of the trust and care pets and their families need, as well as the challenges and rewards of delivering exceptional service. This hands-on work not only shaped my perspective but also influenced how I approach both the client and employee experience. My time in the field helped me create a business where pets feel secure and loved, and pet parents feel confident in the care they’re receiving.
While I no longer provide visits myself, I’m deeply involved in leading and supporting our amazing team of pet care professionals. I take great care in selecting team members who share my passion for animals and my commitment to building meaningful connections with clients. Together, we work to ensure that Happy Paws is a trusted partner for every family we serve.
Outside of Happy Paws, I’m passionate about starting and growing businesses that make a positive impact. I also cherish time with my family and friends, finding joy and inspiration in the relationships I nurture both personally and professionally. Whether I’m guiding my team or brainstorming my next venture, I approach everything I do with care, creativity, and a dedication to doing things the right way.

What do you love most about working with animals?
Animals have a way of making every day feel worthwhile. There’s something really special about earning a pet’s trust and knowing they feel safe and loved while their owner is away. I genuinely look forward to every visit because no two pets are the same, and that keeps things interesting in the best way.
How do you help pets feel comfortable when their owners are away?
I believe in keeping things calm and consistent by sticking to the routines pets already know and giving them plenty of attention and reassurance. I take time to meet them where they are, whether that means sitting on the floor or just moving slowly and letting them come to me when they’re ready. Patience goes a long way.
What kinds of pets or situations do you especially enjoy working with?
I have a soft spot for pets that need a little extra care, like seniors and animals that require medication. I’ve been giving medication to pets for a long time, including my own cats (I have three at home!), so it’s never something I shy away from. It just takes a gentle touch and a little patience, and honestly those visits feel the most rewarding because you can really see the difference you’re making.
